The Northern Lights-Aurora Borealis

The Northern Lights – Aurora Borealis – Places of Interest in Norway

Although this is not a place it well deserves a mention here as one of the world’s most amazing sights. Watch nature put on her spectacular, theatrical show. The words ‘Aurora borealis’come from the Roman goddess of Dawn ‘Aurora’ and the greek name for north wind ‘Boreas’. In times gone by it was thought that the lights were a sign from God or a dance of the spirits, today scientists tell us that it is actually a collision of charged particles directed by the Earth’s magnetic field. This phenomena is best visible on a dark, moonless night in late autumn/winter or early spring, so remember to wrap up warmly because you may have to wait a while. You should be able to see the lights over most of Norway but the best places are above the artic circle in the north of Norway.
