Basilica Papale di San Pietro in Vaticano – The Papal Basilica of St.Peter in Rome, lies inside the Vatican City. The tomb of the first Bishop of Rome, St.Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Christ, is located underneath the main altar of the Basilica. Many of the popes have been buried at St.Peters since early Christian times. A church has stood here since the 4th century but the present Renaissance Basilica was started on 18 April 1506 and was completed on 18 November 1626. It is one of the largest churches in the world and is described as “The Greatest of all churches in Christendom”. St.Peter’s Basilica draws many pilgrims every year and the Pope presides at many masses throughout the year, some are held inside and some outside with the crowds able to watch from St.Peter’s Square. Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday bring thousands of pilgrims together in the square to celebrate and catch a glimpse of the pope and listen to his Easter message.
