The Stone mask of a Roman God with long hair and an open mouth has long been famous as the “Bocca della Verita” or “Mouth of Truth”. It is said that if you place your hand inside the opening of the mouth and tell a lie then your hand will be bitten off. The legend of the “Bocca della Verita” was spread even further by the Hollywood film “Roman Holiday” starring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn. Today this stone face sits in the portico of the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Rome at the foot of the Aventine Hills. It attracts many visitors every year who queue up to chance putting their hand into the famous mouth.
