Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, Rome

‘Basilica Papale di San Paolo fuori le Mura’ – is one of the four Papal Basilicas of Rome and is the second largest after St.Peter’s. The Basilica is said to stand over the burial place of St.Paul whose followers are said to have erected a memorial named a ‘celle memoriae’ and this memorail was later expended upon. The Emperor Constantine later constructed a Basilica on this sopt which was consecrated by Pope Silvester I in 394. St.Paul body lies in a tomb below the Basilica’s crypt, his head is at the Lateran. The final resting place of St.Paul is just two miles from his place of execution. This Basilica is a major stopping place for pilgrims.
