The Basilica of St.Lawrence outside the walls is a minor Basilica and one of the seven pilgrimage churches of Rome and one of the five patriarchal Basilicas. It has the title of ‘Outside the walls’ as it stands outside the ancient city walls of Rome. It has been built over the tomb of St. Lawrence who was a deacon in the treasury of the catholic church and was executed in 258 AD, the tomb of St. Stephen is also enshrined here under the high altar. The body of Pope Pius IX, who has been beatified, is also buried at the Basilica.
