|A ‘winter wonderland’ awaits visitors to Prague as the city is lit up with festive lights, christmas trees and traditional wooden stalls bringing a magical atmosphere to the run up to Christmas. The market runs daily throughout December including Christmas Day and New Years Day. The main market is situated in the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, with smaller ones at Republic Square and Havel’s market. Here you will find traditional Czech products, handicrafts and, of course wonderful, warming food and drink. Sizzling sausages, corn on the cob, pastries and local specialities. Christmas stocking fillers such as Bohemian crystal, wooden toys, scented candles, hand-made jewellery, ceramics, woollen goods, puppets and tree ornaments are all to be found among the decorated stalls.
For the children there are sheep, goats and a donkey to stroke, and a wooden stable complete with crib figures to enjoy.Children can join in making decorations and masks and other Christmas related activities. Above the market towers the impressive Christmas tree brought in from the Krkonose mountains in the north, which is draped in a show of festive lights which are switched on at 5pm each day setting a beautiful sight against a dark gothic skyline. The stage in the Old Town Square hosts daily carol singing and school children dressed in traditional costume sing and dance for the watching crowds.
All in all December in Prague is a truly memorable time.
